See how much free space you have on the HDD. If its loaded with too much stuff and fragmented terribly, things could slowdown a lot and also freeze. Fragmentation occurs in the background over time when you add or delete lots of files or large files and is a cause for instability.

you need 1 gb minimum to run vista, but you should really use 2 gb’s of ram, and that will handle your needs easily.
